R.C. Sherriff (1896-1975), author of the stage play Journey’s End, was intimately aware of the above, having lived through the war as a British army officer. He fought near the Somme at Vimy Ridge, and later in Belgium at Loos and at Passchendaele where he was severely wounded in 1917 and billeted out of the war.
